This week’s Track Down Tuesday takes a look at another familiar face from the past that you may THINK has passed from the limelight, but in reality has simply stepped to the left of the spotlight and let some of those close to her be the focus.  On this week’s Track Down Tuesday, we find out what Lisa Bonet has been up to since her Denise Huxtable days!

It’s hard to have grown up in the 1980’s and NOT have had a bit of a crush on Lisa Bonet. It’s also very hard to discuss that show without touching on some of the controversy that has arisen recently around its main star, but we’ll do our best to avoid that discussion.

After starting off on the beauty pageant circuit, Lisa began getting guest spots on shows like St. Elsewhere and Tales From The Darkside.  In 1984, she landed the role of Denise Huxtable on a new and risky show that dared to show a successful and well-balanced African-American family in New York. At that time, the American public was used to shows like Sanford & Son and Good Times, so showing a happy, thriving black family was quite a revolutionary idea.  And for one of the four children (yes, originally, it was only four children) to be a beautiful and quirky icon of style was even more of a risk.  And Lisa Bonet was precisely the person to take that risk.

From the onset, rumors had Bonet and Cosby not seeing eye-to-eye on everything from her wardrobe to the way she talked.  Mr. Cosby supposedly had a very specific way he wanted to portray the characters on his show and Lisa pushed the boundaries on that quite a lot.  After a very sexually-explicit scene in 1987’s Angel Heart (that we can’t link to here, you dirty Frogs), Mr. Cosby chose to “punt” in the Lisa Bonet game.  He set her up in her own spinoff, A Different World.  She left/was fired from that show after she publicly announced her pregnancy with then-boyfriend Lenny Kravitz and returned to The Cosby Show before being dropped again and her character being shuffled off to Africa to be a photographer.  To be specific, I believe it was the small African town of Mandyville.

After the Cosby Show, Lisa did her best to distance herself from that image.  She remained in the tabloids by eloping with Lenny Kravitz shortly after leaving the Cosby Show and then giving birth to their child several months later. The couple divorced in 1993 but you can thank that brief union for daughter Zoe, who seems to have inherited her parent’s good looks and acting abilities.  You probably saw her looking like this in this Summer’s smash hit, Mad Max: Fury Road:

In 1997, she legally changed her name to Lilakoi Moon (although she still acts under the name Lisa Bonet). She started dating Jason Momoa shortly after his stint on Stargate: Atlantis (and shortly before his Khal Drogo and Conan days) and the two married in 2007.  They have two children: Lola Iolani and Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.  No, we’re not making that up.  And, no, we have no idea how to pronounce it.

On the acting front, Lisa appeared in several direct-to-video films and made-for-TV movies. In 1998 she had a supporting role in Enemy of the State with Will Smith. In 2000, she appeared in the movie High Fidelity. In 2003, she played the role of Queenie in Biker Boyz, which reunited her with former co-star Kadeem Hardison of A Different World. She’s having a bit of a resurgence lately acting alongside Momoa in Road to Paloma (which he directed and starred in) and the Sundance show The Red Road (which he also stars in). And, for you comic nerds out there, yes, that means Lisa Bonet is sleeping with Aquaman.  Guess you could say she sleeps with the fishes?

If you want to reach Lilakoi directly, she recently joined Twitter after a fake account pretending to be her weighed in on the Cosby controversy in an unpleasant manner.  Even though Lisa and Mr. Cosby have both publicly stated their ongoing bad blood (Cosby refused to let her on the Cosby Show series finale and she has since refused to appear at several retrospectives about the show), neither Lisa Bonet nor Lilakoi Moon have officially said anything either for or against her former TV dad.

So say hi to Lilakoi Moon (the actress formerly known as Lisa Bonet) in this week’s Track Down Tuesday:
